  1. New Year’s, 2012!

    December 27, 2011 by marlameringue

New Year’s Eve!  Come and hang out with us!

  2. Halloween approaches!

    October 5, 2011 by marlameringue

And we all know what that means!  It means that 1.  Sticky Buns Burlesque is busy as hell, 2. Costumers like me are busy as hell, and 3. Mass-produced costumes are as stupid as ever.

As someone who makes the bulk of her living being sexy (and only a small portion being skilled and/or brainy), it saddens me that Halloween is one of the only times during the year that people feel allowed to publicly express their sexuality.  Thus, every female-oriented costume is spun as “sexy”– and for the record, all, INSECTS are NOT HOT.  We do not need 22 different versions of the “sexy bee.”

The other thing that bothers me is the automatic assumption that a uniform is attractive.  I’m looking forward to the debut of the “sexy mail-carrier,” or the “sexy bus-driver,” or the “sexy fast-food employee.”

I call Halloween “amateur night” because it’s for those who aren’t used to displaying so much or having so much fun with their external appearance.  And it brings out one of the really wonderful things about costume– that disguises sometimes reveal as much about the wearer as they try to conceal.  The rash of themed sexiness shows that maybe people would like to show that side of themselves to the world more often.

    Modeling at Dr. Sketchy's

    Modeling at Dr. Sketchy's

Fox 45 Baltimore did a segment on burlesque featuring me modeling for Dr. Sketchy’s at the Windup Space! Special thanks to Alexis de la Rosa and Aaron Bush for organizing the event and putting Fox in touch with me and to Fred Zeleny, Kerry Brady, Craig Hankin, El Stabo Art, and everyone else who contributed interviews and artwork!

  5. Shameless Bandwagoning.

    June 15, 2011 by marlameringue

In an effort to push out all the recipes for desserts that appear when you Google “Marla Meringue,” I have created a Deviant Art account.  Tumblr and Zivity most likely coming soon as I succumb to the pressures of needing to pay my bills.  Social networking for the anti-social.  In fact, even as I was writing that, I added a Tumblr.  That’s right, bitches.  I have my own website and I STILL got a Tumblr.  I’m going to be all over this internet like cats.  But no Twitter.  I just can’t bring myself to do Twitter.

In other news, Dr. Sketchy’s was AWESOME.  If you didn’t come, you missed out.  I’ll be posting some pics of that at a later date.

So, here are my new media sites:

  6. Dr. Sketchy’s Birthday – June 13!

    June 5, 2011 by marlameringue

    Hello friends!

I’ll be performing and modeling at the next Dr. Sketchy’s Baltimore!  Dr. Sketchy’s is a chain of life-drawing/cabaret events that take place around the country.  Baltimore’s Dr. Sketchy’s branch, run by the lovely Alexis de la Rosa and Aaron Bush, asked me to model for their special 3rd birthday session!

As I hope you can see by this kicking poster, the session is Monday, June 13 at 7pm!  Admission is $8 and tipping is heavily encouraged!  There will be contests, prizes, alcohol, and lots of fun burlesque times!

  7. Pittsburgh!

    May 18, 2011 by marlameringue

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to perform in my hometown of Pittsburgh!  The amazing Phat Man Dee joined Sticky Buns Burlesque as MC and jazz singer extraordinaire!    We were also joined by The ‘Burgh’s premier burlesque troupe, the aptly-named Bridge-City Bombshells.

I met Phat Man Dee way back in high school, when I was making corsets out of maps and reciting monologues from the point of view of a stripper.  Oh, and making art and stuff.

    More pics coming soon!

  8. And they called her Elsie.

    April 17, 2011 by marlameringue

Here is a shot of a collaboration between me and Susie Brandt.  We made this costume for Elsie the Cow, who lives in upstate New York.  Susie Made the dress and I made the apron.

    Ain’t she a beauty?

  9. I’m just a little black raincloud…

Here’s an image of my newest act/costume.  I’m a drag raincloud!

Seen here at Sticky Buns’ monthly show at the Cazbar!

So things here at marlaparker.com are pretty much up and running.  The only thing left to do is install a calendar so y’all can check out my schedule.  I also have more photos of costumes that I hope to be able to post soon.  In the meantime, you can check out the costume galleries for some other goodies.

Here’s a sneak peek of some upcoming attractions:
